A new real ale and chilli bar is opening in Hull's Old Town

A real ale bar with a fiery twist is set to open in Hull's Old Town.

The Brief in Manor Street, next to the Land of Green Ginger, will be serving locally sourced beers alongside food infused with chilli flavours.

The business is scheduled to open on Friday, April 21 and is the brainchild of Ian Ibbetson.

Mr Ibbetson, also known as Hull's Chilli Devil, has been handcrafting chilli sauces in the city for almost a decade.

He said: "I think there is space for a quality real ale bar in the Old Town. This will be a real ale and chilli bar, so I believe it will be a quirky addition to the city's offer.

"The idea to get my own place on the high street has been on the cards for some time, but I took the final decision to go ahead with it in January last year.

"The building is a former solicitors office, hence why I called it The Brief.

"There is still a lot of work to do in terms of painting, getting a sign up and putting all of the furniture inside, and I have a guy coming in over the bank holiday weekend to try and work out how to put a beer cellar in a former solicitors strong room.

"I am really excited – but scared witless at the same time."

The bar will be pulling a selection of locally sourced pints from micro breweries including The Yorkshire Brewing Company, in Humber Street, and Bricknell Brewery, in Bricknell Avenue, as well as beers from the likes of Ossett Brewery, in West Yorkshire.

These will be offered alongside an ever-changing selection of chilli recipes and pies.

Mr Ibbetson launched Chilli Devil in Arthur Street in 2010 after years of wowing friends with his handcrafted sauces and ketchups.

The spicy entrepreneur, whose current headquarters are based in the aptly named Chilli Towers, said: "I will be continuing to make sauces at Chilli Towers, and running sauce making 'experience' days, but this will complement what I am doing here in the Old Town.

"Funnily enough, I gave a talk about Chilli Devil at a Hull Bid event a couple of years ago. When I approached banks about the new venture, one of the managers had been sitting in the audience, so knew all about the business."
