Building a community
When a local property firm took on the renovation of a Cleethorpes charity building, little did they know the impact it would have on the elderly community. @emma mathias@ finds out more ...
The inspired design and renovation of Age UK in Cleethorpes has meant more to local residents than property business owner, Chris Read, could have hoped.
Approached in early 2016 by the chief officer of Age UK’s Cleethorpes branch, Helen Kirk, Chris and his team were more than happy to help the charity create a new community space.
Helen said: “I had a rough idea of what we wanted to do but Chris was excellent with putting it all together.
“He helped with the design and came up with suggestions, which has meant the building is more than we ever could have hoped for.
“They did everything; from plumbing to re-wiring, insulation and then there are the outer walls, which are made from plastic!
“I’ve never seen anything like it before. We were wondering what to clad the building with, but Chris suggested it as an option and it looks fantastic. Unless you are very close, it looks like brick.
“Older members, who used the building when it was very run down in previous years, can’t believe the transformation. They all love it!”
Anyone who knew the building prior to the work will probably have thought it was good for nothing except knocking down! But Chris, who is managing director of Reads Property Commercial and Residential Improvements Ltd in Grimsby, saw things very differently and rose to the challenge put before him.
He said: “There isn’t much that, as a company, we can’t do so it was an opportunity to do everything from scratch. In addition to the main frame, floors and insulation, we also sourced and installed a commercial kitchen, a first aid room and an office.”
And Chris isn’t wrong when he says the business can do anything.
Reads Property, with its 12 staff and nine vans, do jobs on industrial, commercial and residential properties and have worked on everything from small jobs for homeowners right through to industrial work with ABP.
If you need a damp course, a bathroom installing, a conservatory building, a swanky new drive, an extension or even a new socket installing in the living room – Reads Property really is a one-stop shop for everything you can think of.
And that’s not all ... when the team are busy working on a project, they are very careful when it comes to the environment.
Chris said: “We don’t use skips. We have our own recycling areas on site and a solid recycling policy. Every piece of rubbish is removed and recycled at the end of each working day.
“We try to cause the minimum amount of disruption on a job, which is much better for our customers.”
The team are also pioneers of new products and are always on the hunt for innovative ideas, such as the plastic, brick-effect cladding on the Age UK building.
Chris said: “We sourced it from Poland. It comes in many different colours and types of brick, including a stone effect.
“There was another brick colour that we would have preferred for the outside of Age UK but we have to comply with building regulations and this was the colour that we all settled on.”
The new community space was opened by actress Julie Peasgood in December 2016 and has been a real hit with staff, service users and celebrities alike!
Julie said: “I thought the new Age UK centre was lovely – a bright, welcoming space that would be great to visit and to have a meal in or catch up with friends. The atmosphere was very positive and upbeat, the staff were warm and friendly and I was really impressed with the new treatment room too.”
Chief Officer, Helen, finished: “Our service users love it. Nobody thought they could do anything with the building but the end result is brilliant. It was real value for money.
“Reads Property is on our list of recommended trades companies, which we hand to the elderly should they enquire about service. The staff are all police checked, too.
“And although the building has been finished for a few months, Chris still pops in to check everything is alright.
“We can’t rate them highly enough.”
