Cleethorpes chippy in running to be crowned UK's best - and it hasn't even opened yet!

CLEETHORPES' newest restaurant Papa's Fish and Chips is in the running to be crowned the best chippy in the country after being selected to take part in an illustrious BBC competition.

Acclaimed Michelin chef Tom Kerridge could be about to name regional business Papa's, set to open up as the "world's biggest" fish and chip shop in the country at Cleethorpes Pier next month, as the best takeaway of its kind in the UK.

Fending off competition from hundreds of chippies up and down the country, Papa's, which has two restaurants in Hull and one in Scarborough, has made it into the top three of the best fish and chip shops nationally in BBC Two's The Best Of British Takeaways show.

Owners of the business, the Papa family, will find out on Tuesday night, when the show airs on national television at 7pm, if they have done enough to secure the crown as the catch of the day and the UK's best.

In January the award for the best fish fryer in the country was handed to Papa's Fish and Chips chef, George Papadamou, at the National Fish and Chip Awards finals.

In Tuesday's BBC Two showdown, Papa's will take part in a series of challenges in a bid to impress critically-acclaimed chef, Tom Kerridge, and fish restaurateur, Mitch Tonks.Papas is up against Camden-based Hooks and Exmouth chippy Krispies.

Back in December, the announcement that popular Papa's, fronted by head of the family, Sid and his son, Dino, is coming to Cleethorpes was greeted with excitement by promising to "bring the pier back into its heyday" and serve up the "best fish and chips you have ever tasted".

Over 100 new jobs will be created and when the huge restaurant, capable of hosting around 500 diners at a time, opens its doors next month.

Since taking over, the Papa family have run the Pier in its current format, with the tea room, bar and function room staying open alongside the new fish and chip restaurant.

The transformation of the Pier from what we know it as now, an image that saw it crowned Pier of the Year 2016 by the National Piers Society, to a state-of-the-art fish and chip restaurant, has already begun.

Dino has confirmed that the new restaurant will open its doors no later than April 9, if not before, just in time for the Easter holidays and the start of the tourism season in Cleethorpes.

New equipment, decor and kitchen fittings will be installed at the end of March and locals are urged to keep an eye out for signs of the re-brand taking shape.

If crowned the best chippy in the country Dino has pledged to hand out FREE fish and chips at the branches in Hull and Scarborough. Unfortunately the giveaway has come a week or two too soon for freebies to be handed out in Cleethorpes, but there's nothing stopping locals here making the short trip to Hull for a free meal.

The Best Of British Takeaways will air at 7pm on BBC Two on Tuesday.
