Controversial plans for 150 homes in Swanland rejected

Hundreds of residents have won their fight against a controversial housing scheme for one of the East Riding's most desirable villages.
More than 300 villagers objected to plans for 150 homes on greenfield land at Swanland. Residents launched a Save Our Village action group to oppose the plans by Cheshire-based Gladman Developments.
Now, East Riding Council's planning committee has rejected the scheme for a site on the western edge of the village.
The land, west of Sykes Close, was not earmarked for development in the council's recently approved Local Plan.
Ward Councillor Julie Abraham warned the rate of development in the West Hull villages is unprecedented in recent times.
She told the planning committee: "This has implications for the local infrastructure and services.
"Residents are also concerned about highways issues arising from the development and the cumulative impact of traffic generated from this site on top of the traffic movements arising from the five sites that are allocated in the Local Plan."
Cllr Abraham warned there would soon be "an explosion of new housing" in Swanland, North Ferriby, Anlaby, Willerby and Hessle, bringing a rapid increase in traffic on the A164.

She said the roundabout at the junction of the A164/B1231 is over capacity and there are wider problems in the road network for traffic accessing the A63 at the Humber Bridge junction and also at Great Gutter Lane on the A164.
Cllr Abraham said four of the five Swanland sites allocated for development in the Local Plan have either received planning permission or have been submitted for consideration.
She said: "The total number of dwellings is already at 180 units and if the fifth site comes forward that number will rise to 205.
"This is in the first year of the new plan which is supposed to last until 2029.
"If the Gladman application was to be approved, the total number of dwellings would rise to 355, representing a 21 per cent growth rate for the village, which is totally unacceptable in terms of its effects on village services and infrastructure.
"The village supports the Local Plan and does not want to see the strategy undermined so that there is a free for all in housing development."
Ward Councillor Vanessa Walker said the field sought for housing was best agricultural land that should remain in farming use.
She told the planning committee: “This site is surrounded by land recognised in the Local Plan as of high value and typical of the Wolds. This estate would intrude into that landscape irrespective of any mitigation measures taken.
“Views across Swanland Dale from High Hunsley and from Nut Wood belonging to the Woodland Trust would be affected and unless there were overriding needs for housing, would be another reason for refusal of this application."
The planning committee voted unanimously to refuse planning permission for the 150-home scheme.
