The waste management team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been shortlisted for a prestigious National Recycling Award.
The service, which handles the collection and recycling of residents’ household rubbish, has earned a nomination for Team of the Year in the public/third sector category at the annual awards.
The National Recycling Awards honour achievements in the UK recycling industry.
Ikea, Costa and Network Rail are just some of the other organisations nominated for awards in other categories at the event.
The waste management team has been recognised for a successful campaign which has increased the recycling of food waste in the East Riding.
The council carried out a series of trials in the Bridlington, Pocklington, Market Weighton and Willerby areas last year, where orange tags were placed on residents’ green bins with a polite message asking them to not to put food waste inside, and to put it in their brown bin instead.
The trials resulted in an average increase of 7% (around 1kg) of waste per household being shifted from green bins into brown and blue bins for recycling.
The campaign is now being rolled out across the East Riding in the hope the results will be replicated, which could see a further 6,000 tonnes of waste being recycled each year.
The council also achieved the second highest recycling rate in the whole of England in the Government’s latest recycling figures for 351 local authorities.
The waste management team is up against nine other nominees in the public/third sector category category, including Keep Britain Tidy.
Mike Featherby, head of Streetscene Services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "We are extremely pleased to be nominated for a prestigious National Recycling Award, and have our dedicated team recognised on a national level for our recycling schemes, which have engaged residents and produced one of the best council recycling rates in the country."
The winners of the National Recycling Awards will be announced at a ceremony in London on June 28.
The council’s waste management team is comprised of more than 200 staff, including waste collection crews and waste and recycling officers.
