Foodservice boost for Young's as Pret work expands

​Grimsby’s Young’s Seafood is significantly increasing its foodservice presence after winning a ‘substantial contract renewal to supply a leading, international sandwich and salad chain’ – understood to be Pret a Manger.

In addition, the new contract will see Young’s expand its supply of salmon from two lines to five, delivering in one of the important strategic growth areas set out by the executive team.

It comes just days after completing on the purchase of a huge 13.5 acre site on Ladysmith Road as it consolidates the popular species’ processing in the town, closing facilities in Annan, Scotland.

Young’s will now supply for salmon sandwiches, baguettes and protein pots in addition to a new salad offering and seasonal special baguette.

​Bill Showalter, chief executive of Young’s Seafood Ltd, said: “Increasing our foodservice presence is a key pillar of our strategic growth plan and our continued success in this market demonstrates the quality and innovation of our supply. The expansion of our contract with this leading, international sandwich chain, growing from two lines to five, is a testament to the significant scope we have to increase our presence in this sector.” 

It follows the appointment of Roger Sudlow, who has joined the foodservice team at Ross House as business development manager.

He will be responsible for developing Young’s business in the pub, restaurant, fast food and casual dining sectors – a market sector that continues to offer huge opportunities for Young’s. 

Mr Sudlow joins from Manchester-based The Authentic Food Co, a leading provider of frozen world food solutions, having also worked for foodservice-focused Aryzta, also in Manchester, and Wakefield’s Speedibake. 

The news comes at a turbulent time for the openly ‘for sale’ business, as it sees further growth of the Young’s brand in the USA with increased distribution, new products and extensions to existing lines, while it examines what the loss of Asda contracts will mean at home, as it also takes on Marks and Spencer contracts from Five Star Fish in a Grimsby merry-go-round of seafood contracts.
