Get your sugar fix at sparkling new cafe Just Good Cake in Grimsby

A sparkling new café offering home-made cakes and picture-perfect afternoon tea has opened in Grimsby.

Just Good Cake, on Wellowgate, offers a selection of cupcakes, cheesecakes, and afternoon teas to Grimsby’s sweet toothed folk.

Becky Hornsey, 36, the café’s owner, evolved Just Good Cakes from an occasion cake business she had run out of her home for five years.

She said: “I’ve been baking from home for about five years, and it just expanded to where I needed to be out of the house.

“I needed my own kitchen, so I decided to move the business here.”

Becky’s love of baking grew with her business after she baked her own wedding cake in 2011. After this, she was inundated with requests for beautiful occasion cakes.

This was enough to encourage Becky, who had just given birth to her second daughter Ava, to give up her “unsociable hours” at Bar Babylon in Cleethorpes and pursue a career in baking.

She said: “It’s really in the last five years that I’ve become interested in making cakes, after I made my own wedding cake.

“After that, I started to get asked if I could make other people cakes for all kinds of reasons.”

But although Becky got her start in occasion cakes, it’s home-style and creatively flavoured cakes and cheesecakes that Just Good Cake is all about.

She said: “My real love is just baking – I love putting new spins on traditional cheesecake flavours like chocolate.

“I recently made a cheesecake with Malteasers and Horlicks just to really give it the malted taste of a Malteaser.

“I don’t really follow recipes – I just make up my own!”

Just Good Cake also offers a range of savoury treats in the form both a children’s and adult’s afternoon tea.

The café is open 11am – 4pm and you can book a table for afternoon tea by calling Becky on 07907 084987.
