THE team at Grimsby family seafood business JCS Fish is celebrating, having brought home five accolades from the Food Management Today Industry Awards.
It won Best Seafood Product for its BigFish Brand Smoked Sea Trout, taking a highly commended and finalist placing in the same category with its Salmon Fillets Marinated with Garden Mint and Salmon Bites in a Chilli and Lime Crispy Golden Crumb.
There was further recognition in the Best Frozen Product category, too, with Salmon Goujons in a Lemon and Pepper Crispy Golden Crumb highly commended, and Natural Sea Trout Fillets also a finalist.
Masterchef host John Torode presented the awards to the Murray Street firm, with director Louise Coulbeck describing how she was “over the moon to receive no fewer than five endorsements for the BigFish Brand products”.
Launched last year, BigFish Brand’s smoked duo
The Food Management Today Industry Awards are celebration of the creativity and excellence of the British food industry.
The awards shortlist is chosen through the votes of FMT readers before a judging panel evaluates the products to receive the final awards.
Describing it as a “memorable Friday,” Mrs Coulbeck, said: “Well done to every single one of our JCS Fish colleagues for all the work that goes into making our products so delicious every day, these awards really are for the whole team in Grimsby!”
The £6 million turnover business introduced Smoked Sea Trout last May, alongside salmon, working with a third party smoker.
Husband and wife Andrew and Louise Coulbeck
At the time of the launch, managing director Andrew Coulbeck – Louise’s husband – said: “Our aim for BigFish Brand is ‘salmon with a twist’ – in other words interesting products with a focus on taste and accessibility for the consumer.
“Smoked fish is a natural next step and the inclusion of sea trout adds something a little bit different to the range overall.
“It is a tremendous fish for smoking with quite a unique flavour.”
In August the non-smoked sea trout won a Great Taste Award, celebrated because it helps raise the profile of what is considered a relatively unknown alternative to salmon.
Sea trout was introduced by the team in 2016 as salmon farms came under pressure, with issues in the leading markets of Scandinavia and South America coinciding.
