THE chief executive of Anglian Water, Peter Simpson, has been named as the nation’s top boss.

He picked up the coveted highest rated CEO prize in the annual awards compiled by Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest recruitment websites.

Unlike other workplace awards, the Glassdoor Employees’ Choice awards are based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feedback. A company review and comments about the leadership, plus insight into their job, work environment and employer over the past year is included.

An impressive 98 per cent approval rating earned Mr Simpson, who has been at the helm of the northern Lincolnshire supplier for the last eight years, take the top spot in the league table.

It means he polled ahead of other business leaders from international companies and industries including Google, Microsoft, Nationwide and Rolls Royce.

“I feel incredibly flattered – and surprised – to have won this award and would like to thank all our employees who make Anglian Water such a great place to work for everyone, including myself,” Mr Simpson, said.

“I’m very grateful that I have a role where I can work with and develop people and teams in the pursuit of doing something meaningful, and where I can see the impact of what we’re doing."

On the CEO list, XPO Logistics' Bradley Jacobs came 34th, despite the company closing down operations in Grimsby.

Ian King, of BAE Systems landed in 37th spot, with Laurence Fink of BlackRock in 43rd. It has bought into the Humber's offshore wind industry recently.

When it comes to companies to work for, GlaxoSmithKline came in at 17th, with Centrica at 19th - not that the area's employees will feel the benefits for much longer. The owner of British Gas has just divested its offshore wind assets in Grimsby and agreed the sale of South Humber Bank Power Station at Stallingborough.

BP clocks in at 30th.
