Hull eco cleaning firm Bio-D growing overseas sales

Staff at Hull-based Bio-D, the UK's biggest independent producer of eco-friendly home cleaning products, have returned from a visit to Shanghai as the firm's overseas sales continue to grow.

The company has recorded a 30 per cent increase across all international markets in the past six months.

Managing director Lloyd Atkin and key account manager Emily Gallagher visited distributors TCOAI Trading, who are based in China's largest city and have imported Bio-D products for three years.

The trip enabled the firm to explore further opportunities for growth in the Chinese market: Bio-D's exports to China have risen by a third in the past year as the country has embraced a trend for greener lifestyles.

Bio-D is now sold across five Chinese provinces, including in the country's biggest department stores.

Mr Atkin said: "Historically, China has lagged behind other countries in terms of its interest and investment in environmental matters; we're now seeing rapid growth as the country catches up.

"We're leading the eco cleaning industry over there: while consumer demand for greener alternatives is growing, there are still very few producers making products like ours that are natural, hypoallergenic, cruelty free and vegan friendly."

Ray Ren, of TCOAI Trading, said: "More Chinese consumers are becoming concerned about the impact of widespread chemical use and recognising they can start small to make a difference, by avoiding using products at home that are harmful to the environment."There are one or two global brands who make similar claims to Bio-D about containing natural ingredients, yet Bio-D leads the market because everything is made by them in the UK.

"Chinese consumers place great trust in British-made products, which is reflected in their sales."

Bio-D is based in Sutton Fields, east Hull, where it produces more than 20 hypoallergenic, cruelty-free and vegan friendly product lines, including laundry liquid and furniture polish. It exports to 20 countries worldwide.

All Bio-D products are made in Hull from sustainable, naturally-derived raw materials and are free from synthetic fragrances, preservatives and enzymes.

The Bio-D range is approved by Cruelty Free International and the Vegan Society, and its fragrance free products are accredited by Allergy UK.

Bio-D was formed in 1989, after its founder Michael Barwell sought greener alternative solutions to standard home cleaning products. He noticed these often contained the same harmful chemicals as industrial cleaners that require the use of safety equipment.
