Hull has one of slowest internet speeds in UK, new research says

New data has revealed Hull has one of the slowest internet speeds in the country.

Statistics have shown the city is one of only eight "urban centres" in the UK to have an internet connection speed lower than the national average.

According to the figures, only 46.4 per cent of properties in Hull are covered with ultrafast broadband speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

But across the UK, 51.4 per cent of properties reportedly have access to ultrafast internet connection.

It comes as KCOM are rolling out their Lightstream service to more than 150,000 properties by the end of 2017.

The internet provider said it is installing a service better than "anywhere else" in the UK.

"Hull is the only city in the UK where ultrafast broadband is being rolled out as standard thanks to our £60m investment in the latest fibre technology," said Cathy Phillips, chief marketing officer.

"In fact, many areas of Hull and East Yorkshire have ultrafast broadband coverage that is the benchmark that the rest of the UK aspires to, offering download speeds of up to 250Mbps for households and 1GBps for businesses.

"Because the service we're installing is world-class, and far superior to what's available elsewhere in the UK, it's taking us longer to roll it out. It's a hugely ambitious project - our biggest since we built the copper network 110 years ago - and we do appreciate it can be frustrating for people who can't get Lightstream yet."

She said more and more customers would be coming onto the network in the future.

"Our ultrafast service already covers 113,000 properties across Hull and East Yorkshire and we are connecting a new customer to Lightstream every 30 minutes," she said.

"By the end of 2017 it will cover 75 per cent of our network. We're working hard to get to all our customers as soon as possible and we will have our entire network covered by 2020.

", who are behind this research, have also named KCOM as the fastest broadband provider in the UK for the past two months running while Minister of State for Digital and Culture Matt Hancock recently singled out our commitment to a full fibre rollout as 'the future."
