Landmark Hull pub The Dram Shop set to reopen after city firm steps in

A landmark Hull pub which has been vacant for a year looks set to reopen.

The future of The Dram Shop, on the corner of George Street and Savile Street, has been in doubt since it closed last February.

The last tenants ran the pub for nine years but it was put up for commercial let by Topham Larard in October 2015.

Now, a family-owned construction firm is planning to renovate the grade II listed building after purchasing the lease. Soper Group is expected to keep the historic venue going as a pub and rent it out to new tenants.

The Dram Shop was built in 1894 and operated as a shop selling wine and spirits before becoming a pub in 1960. Traditionally, the term "dram shop" refers to a place where spirits are sold by the dram – a small unit of liquid.

The iconic pub holds many happy memories for Kath Bell who used to manage the boozer with her husband Peter in the late 70s.

The pair moved in with their two boys who were six and 12 at the time but had to give up the pub after it became too loud and noisy for their youngest son. It was their first pub in Hull and they went on to run The Schooner, The Oddbottle and City Hotel.

Mrs Bell said: "At that time it was such a busy pub but we only have happy memories of the place. We really got to know people in town through running that place and on a Sunday all the people who worked in the navy and on the submarines used to crowd round the bar.

"Unfortunately it was a bit too busy for us and the youngster used to get frightened by all the noise."

The 77-year-old was elated when she was told by her grandson Danny that the building would continue to operate as a pub.

She said: "I am really pleased. It is such a lovely building inside and it is has seen some really happy times.

"When we had it the ceiling was beautiful and the rooms were really nice upstairs too It's a shame that we lost the pub for a bit but I hope the next tenants do really well in it."
