Lord John Prescott to speak at Made in Yorkshire Expo

Lord John Prescott has been announced as one of the main speakers at this year’s Made in Yorkshire Expo.

The veteran politician, who represented Hull East as a Labour MP for 40 years, will take to the stage at Elland Road in Leeds for the major business event on May 17.

Organisers of the Expo – which will feature manufacturers from sole traders to large SMEs – said Lord Prescott “embodied the true values of Yorkshire,” and is “the perfect fit” for the event.

Chrissie Gale, director, Made in Yorkshire, said: “It is essential to have secured such a speaker of the calibre of Lord Prescott to deliver the keynote speech at this year’s Expo.

“We were looking to secure a speaker who embodied the true values of Yorkshire and its manufacturing community and therefore he is the perfect fit and I know our members are equally as pleased to have him attend our event.”

The Made in Yorkshire Expo takes place at Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium on May 17. It will be the premier manufacturing event of its kind, with scores of Made in Yorkshire members exhibiting and hundreds of people expected to visit.

As well as exhibition stands, speakers will share their inspirational tales throughout the day, and give updates on where Yorkshire industry stands today.

Lord Prescott – who was elevated to the House of Lords in 2010 – recently announced he would be fronting a new TV documentary called ‘Made in Yorkshire.’

He said: “Look out for me on Channel 5 as I explore the two loves of my life; Yorkshire and manufacturing in my new series, Made in Yorkshire.”

Appointed Deputy Prime Minister after Labour came to power in 1997, he went on to retain this position for more than 10 years.

“We would like to think Lord Prescott had us in mind when they came to name the series but whichever way it worked out, it’s a very happy coincidence,” Ms Gale said.

The Expo will be held at Elland Road in Leeds

“We have some incredible manufacturers in Yorkshire - many of which are members of Made in Yorkshire. We are delighted that so many of them have backed our Expo by agreeing to exhibit.

“It is the showcase that the Yorkshire manufacturing community deserves and with Lord Prescott’s backing, firmly establishes Made in Yorkshire as the leading industry support organisation in the county.”
