A NEW coal yard has opened in Ashby.

Martins & Co Coal Supplies LTD opened last month.Tom Jackson, owner of T Jackson Construction, is helping run the business with his father-in-law Martin Francis.

It has opened in the former Kwik Save car park, where Jocks Waterworld used to be, on Ashby High Street.

As well as coal, it also sells seasonal products like charcoal, fence panels, fire pits, logs and kindling.

Tom said: "I am a builder and I have my own business – T Jackson Construction. I needed something other than what I was doing.

"My work is quite seasonal."

Tom said the main items they sell are house coal and smokeless coal.

"We are getting fence panels and sweepers in. We have a refurbishment workshop on site for doing steel fabrication.

"The main thing is the coal yard," he said.

Martin runs the coal yard seven days a week and Tom helps out when he has quiet periods.

Tom said they are going to see which days are busiest for trade.

He said: "What we are trying to do is a modern approach to the coal industry. People expect it will be messy and dirty but my coal yard is clean.

"Tom said they saw a bit of a "niche in the market".

"With me being in the building trade, I have a lot of friends with companies," he said.

Tom said they are currently opening 9am to 5.30pm.
