A 25-YEAR-OLD butcher from Bottesford is steaking a claim to be one of the best in the business.
Brett Hand manages the butcher's counter at The Pink Pig farm, in Holme, and has been shortlisted for Butcher of the Year at the Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2017.
Brett said: "It was a shock to me, Sally (owner) put me in for it, I didn't know anything about it to be fair.
"I am proud of myself. I did my apprenticeship here when I was 17 and came back to manage 17 months ago.
"I had wanted to be a butcher ever since I was at school, my dad was a butcher. I remember going to the butcher's where he worked and have always had an interest in it."
Following evaluation, deliberation, secret visits and mystery shops, the judging panel of industry experts announced Brett as one of the five finalists for Butcher of the Year.
The winner will be announced live at the Farm Shop & Deli Show on Monday, April 24.
The young butcher has gained a strong reputation for producing delicious and creative produce.
One example is the fine selection of sausages on offer at The Pink Pig, which includes cinder toffee and apple flavour.
"I guess having a passion and being enthusiastic pays off. I put my personality into the counter and the stuff I produce," said Brett.
"I have loyal customers who voted for me online and left some great comments – you don't get that in the supermarkets."
The 25-year-old is more than happy to be back at The Pink Pig where he did his apprenticeship as a butcher.
He said: "We are a really close-knit team and here you aren't just a number. "Everybody cares and looks after each other and everybody is friendly and enthusiastic."
Butcher of the Year is just one of 12 categories to be recognised at the event at the NEC in Birmingham next month.
In the Farm Shop category, Uncle Henry's, near Kirton-in-Lindsey, has been nominated for Small Retailer of the Year. Emma Ward, general manager at the farm shop, said, "Here at Uncle Henry's we are passionate about great tasting home-grown and local food. We are also proud to stock products from more than 45 Lincolnshire producers; our local food heroes!
"Winning the Farm Shop Small Retailer of the Year Award would bring recognised achievement to our fantastic team who work hard to source our fantastic local products, make our delicious Uncle Henry's items and serve our customers with passion and enthusiasm for the products we sell."
