The top tech companies in Hull and East Yorkshire were recognised at an awards ceremony in the city last night.

The Digital Awards 2017 was held at a packed Stage@TheDock, beside the iconic C4DI building, and honoured outstanding examples in the region’s digital sector, from hardware and app developers to start-ups, digital innovators and e-commerce businesses.

Sponsored by KCOM and the Hull Daily Mail - one of the key contributors to Humberbusiness.com  the event was the third of its kind to be held in the city, demonstrating the area’s digital vibrancy.

The Stage@TheDock was buzzing as Mike Pennington, managing director of the Hull Daily Mail, launched the proceedings.

He said: “We are here again celebrating the great and good in digital technology and innovation, and the number of entries has been phenomenal.

“Tonight we celebrate in true spirit how far we have come, not only in the digital sector but as a city, as we live the dream this year in the wonderful surroundings of the City of Culture, in which the digital agenda continues to play a huge part.”

Mr Pennington said the digital sector had an important role in the prosperity and wellbeing of many of the area’s employers.

“Digital creates jobs, generates millions of pounds, creates a huge supply chain, but above all, with the entrepreneurs and highly skilled people we have at our disposal, we have a unique opportunity to take digital to a new level in the coming years,” he said.

“Our own business has changed beyond all recognition over recent years with greater content choice, media fragmentation, and further consolidation within the media sector.”

Mr Pennington introduced the evening’s host, David Keel, chairman of Hull’s C4DI, which has been described as a digital "beacon" in Hull's Old Town and Fruit Market area.

Mr Keel said: “This is a celebration of what is probably the biggest, most successful and most important industry to emerge out of our wonderful city since the decline of the fishing industry.

“Tonight is about celebrating the regeneration and economic development of Hull that has come about from the digital success stories that we are hearing about.

“Everyone here today really should congratulate themselves. You are the people we have all been waiting for; you have all played a critically important role in achieving this.

“Digital is the lifeblood of most businesses and Hull is at the centre of this.”

The evening’s keynote speaker was Alexis Conran.

The actor, writer and TV presenter, widely known for his role in The Real Hustle, employs his knowledge of the dark and deceptive world of hustling, pickpockets and con-artists to speak on the risks and security threats constantly faced by businesses and consumers.

Having devised and carried out more than 500 scams, Mr Conran was ideally placed to be able to educate his audience on the issues affecting us in the real and virtual world.

Award presentations were made to ten category winners before Gary Young, executive vice-president of KCOM, was invited to the lectern to make the closing remarks.
