Scunthorpe-made rail on track for £14.8 billion London project

The last consignment of steel from Scunthorpe to build Crossrail, one of Europe’s largest infrastructures at a cost of £14.8 billion, has been delivered.

Since June 2015 the British Steel Scunthorpe works has been supplying track to build the 73-mile Crossrail line which is due to open next year.

The line will provide commuters to London with a new east-west route, linking Reading and Heathrow in the west through new twin-bore 13-mile tunnels to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

More than 7,000 tonnes of Scunthorpe steel has been used – accounting for more than 57 kilometres of the line.

Premium stress alloy heat-treated rail SFL350 was produced using a unique patented process which ensured it had exceptional wear resistance.

The uniquely low residual stresses provide further protection against risk of rail foot failure compared to other in-line heat treatment processes.

British Steel rail has been installed across the entire route.

The first of the new trains was introduced to passenger service for TfL Rail between Liverpool Street and Shenfield earlier this summer.
