Supply and top brand: Seafood smiles from Grimsby to Norway!

By Grimsby Telegraph | Posted: 8 Mar 2017

GRIMSBY'S seafood industry is in fine form on both sides of the North Sea.

North Atlantic Seafood Forum is underway in Bergen, Norway, where key introductions have been made between town representatives and the Icelandic Fisheries Minister, as trade recovers well post strike.

And in the early presentations The Saucy Fish Co has been flagged up by a branding expert as an example of best practice, with plaudits ringing around the conference venue.

Industry expert Claire Nuttall, founder of The Brand Incubator, used Icelandic Seachill's multi-award winning brand in her presentation to global industry leaders at the 12th annual event.

She commented how there were "many logos but few brands," going on to praise the Grimsby giant as "behaving like a leader".

As reported, it has just entered the frozen category with supermarket giant Sainsbury's, seven years after launching as a new chilled brand. It enjoys global sales, with a strong presence in the US and Canada.

In Bergen, members of the Grimsby delegation have also met with new Icelandic Fisheries Minister Thorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir. Simon Dwyer, who acts as secretariat to Grimsby Fish Merchants' Association and Grimsby Fishing Vessel Owners Association, joined Marcus Coleman, chief executive of Seafish, in making introductions to the politician, who was appointed as the strike was ongoing, following the recent formation of a new government.

Back below the Dock Tower this morning, another strong market of 1,455 boxes was welcomed, with the team at Grimsby Fish Market stating that more fish has been sold in three days than in three weeks because of the disruption, which saw trawlers tied up in December.

Monday's auction was the best of the year, and the strength of supply has continued, with bosses hoping it builds towards Easter.

Of the total under auction today (Wednesday, March 8), 1,387 boxes were Icelandic, underlining the huge return following the end of the dispute that crippled supply from the key trading partner.
