Shock as popular Beverley restaurant suddenly closes

A Beverley restaurant shocked customers on Sunday night when it announced it had closed with immediate effect.

Rub Burgers and Shakes – formerly Rebels’ Smokehouse – revealed the decision to close on its Facebook page, and thanked customers for their support over the last five years.

Mystery surrounds the sudden closure, and Rub has not yet given any clues as to why it has shut its doors for the final time.

A statement on its Facebook page said: “It’s with great regret that we announce that Rebels/Rub Beverley has now closed with immediate effect. Thank you for your custom and support over the last five years.

“The fully licensed restaurant is now available to rent as the full package for pop ups, short term or longer term lets. Please DM for details. Please let street food operators know.

“The team have all been offered other positions within the company.”

Rebels’ Smokehouse, in Butcher Row, proved a big hit with customers in Beverley, before it re-branded to Snap earlier this year.

The venture proved to be short lived however, as Snap quickly changed to Rub Burgers and Shakes.

The restaurant offered a selection of tasty burgers and hot dogs, alongside trademark milkshakes and impressive desserts.

Rub was perhaps even better known however for its eating challenge dishes.

From chicken nugget birthday cakes to burrito lasagnes and two-foot-long pizza slices, few people were able to conquer the challenges Rub set its hungry visitors.

Sadly it appears Rub has closed its doors for the final time, leaving fans in the dark as to why.

Hull Live has contacted the restaurant for an explanation, but has received no reply so far.

The owners admitted back in March that they thought they had “made a mistake” ditching the Rebels’ brand, but pushed forward with their plans to open Snap.

A spokesman for Rub said: "We started to think we had made a mistake when we initially announced that we were closing Rebels', but we were so far in we had to go with the launch of Snap.

"Rebels' was dear to a lot of people, and we can include customers in York, Scarborough, Grimsby and Scunthorpe, as well as locally.

"Many people were really disappointed with the closure of Rebels'.”

Customers have now been left disappointed once again, as the popular restaurant has closed, leaving an empty space in the heart of Beverley.
