Top legal advice on the growing issue of mental health illness in the workplace

A major conference on mental health fitness in the workplace will feature vital employer advice, delivered by experts from the region’s leading law firm.
Partners from Wilkin Chapman solicitors Jane Eatock and Katie Davies will present a talk entitled ‘Are ill health absences causing you a headache?’.
Aimed at employers, managers and HR representatives, the session will be part of this year’s Fortis Therapy & Training conference.
Called 'Surviving or Thriving? Mental Health Fitness in the Workplace', the event at The Oaklands Hotel, Barton Street, Laceby, on Thursday November 16, features speeches, workshops and information stands from some of the region’s leading professionals.
During their talk, Jane Eatock and Katie Davies will offer advice to employers on how early intervention can help to prevent long-term issues, which can lead to lengthy sickness absences.
Recent studies have revealed how stress is now the major cause of long-term absence in both manual and non-manual UK workers, costing employers’ between £26-billion and £30-billion a year through lost production, recruitment and absence.
Jane Eatock will stress how such issues must be dealt with properly by employers so that they support staff members, while protecting themselves from the risk of further action.
“There is no doubt that such matters have to be handled carefully in order that both the employer and the employee are protected. Failure to take account of proper procedure may lead to lengthy and sometimes expensive legal proceedings,” said Jane Eatock.
The talk will outline what the correct procedures are, while advising on early intervention, the responsibilities of the employer and how to handle long-term absence.
