When Papa's Fish and Chips will give away meals for just 1p - and how you can get yours

To celebrate the success of being crowned Britain's best fish and chip shop, Papa's will be serving up the UK's favourite takeaway for the bargain price of just 1p.

Usually costing £4.25, the family behind Papa's Fish and Chips are inviting everyone back to theirs for a portion of regular 10oz haddock and chips.

The offer is available all day at both the Willerby and Bilton sites on Tuesday and is being held so the owners can celebrate their amazing achievement with the whole of Hull.

It is expected to be so popular, Papa's has had to inform policeto prevent any potential traffic problems.

Dino Papas celebrating the win.

Dino Papas, who owns the restaurant alongside his brother George and dad Sid, said the family were "ecstatic" after they were triumphant on BBC 2's Britain's Best Takeaways on Tuesday night.

"We are still celebrating, it is absolutely fantastic, especially to such a national audience," said Dino. "We thought rather than celebrate with a bottle of champagne between ourselves we would get the whole of Hull involved.

"Especially as it is Hull 2017 and it is the year of culture, we are saying everybody come back to ours."

The restaurant was chosen to appear on the BBC 2 show after secret diners reviewed fish and chip shops up and down the country. They then went head to head against two other restaurants and were crowned the winner by Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge.

"There was definitely a pressure on to impress him," said Dino. "He was so complimentary about our food and after filming we were asked to cook for the whole production team and they said they loved the food.

"We can't put into words how happy we are to be the best fish and chip shop. We are number one so what could be better than selling fish and chips for 1p?"

Papa's "amazing team" will have suppliers on standby who will be bringing fish to both restaurants every hour throughout the day. This is to ensure the ingredients are as fresh and high quality as possible – and to make sure they do not run out.

Last May the fish and chip shop sold off delicious portions for just 50p, which saw traffic grind to a halt. They are anticipating a similar response this time.

Dino said: "We have been told police need to keep an eye on the traffic because when we had our 50p promotion there were traffic queues all the way to the Humber Bridge.

"We just want to make sure we don't run out or have fish waiting because we want everyone to be involved."

Papa's Fish and Chips can be found in Great Gutter Lane in Willerby and at the former Swiss Cottage pub in Bilton. Open from 11.30am, the 1p offer will be held on Tuesday, March 28, all day at both sites. Call 01482 651255 for further information. Gluten free and vegetarian options are available.
